Overview

The MSC-172 class comprises 51 ships in four numbering blocks: MSC-172–189, 210–213, 222–237, and 241–253.

Developed for Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia, Portugal and later recipient navies, MSC-172 class belongs to the Mine warfare vessels family and is associated with Cold War. Its documented designations include Motor minesweeper and Coastal minesweeper, while its intended roles include Coastal minesweeping, Mine hunting, and Allied mine warfare.

Development and construction

The Dutch-built subgroup was explicitly based on the British Ton-class coastal minesweeper and used a 417-ton, roughly 150-foot configuration. French and related MDAP hulls used a smaller 144-foot / 375-ton arrangement. These technical differences are preserved as configurations rather than separate physical ships.

The documented program for MSC-172 class lists 51 planned, 51 ordered, 51 laid down, 51 completed, and 0 cancelled, with design work beginning in 1952, construction beginning in 1953, and construction ending in 1957. These figures define the scale and chronology currently supported by the class sources.

Design characteristics and intended role

The surviving classification data associates MSC-172 class with Wood hull, Non-magnetic construction, and Diesel propulsion. Read together with the recorded roles of Coastal minesweeping, Mine hunting, and Allied mine warfare, these attributes show the operational problem the design was intended to address without implying specifications that the sources do not establish.

The class record identifies Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia, Portugal and later recipient navies as the principal design or service authority. Where individual ships changed navy, name, or pennant, those later identities are retained on the ship pages rather than treated as separate vessels.

Service history and class roster

The class served the Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia and Portugal, with later transfers including Peru and Morocco. Yugoslav Slobodni and Smeli are preserved with the ship-specific M 153 and M 152 pennants respectively.

The class roster currently links 51 ships. Named members include Achernar, Aldebaran, Aldébaran, Algol, Antarès, BAP Carrasco, Bellatrix, and Canopus. The linked ships are associated with French Navy, Peruvian Navy, Royal Netherlands Navy, Yugoslav Navy, Portuguese Navy, and Royal Moroccan Navy.

Historical significance

MSC-172 shows how the U.S.-administered MDAP numbering system encompassed allied-built vessels with distinct national design influences while still forming one procurement lineage.

MSC-172 class is most useful when read as both a design and a group of individual careers. The class page establishes the shared technical and operational context; the linked ship pages preserve differences in construction, service identity, deployment, transfer, preservation, and fate where those details are documented.
