Overview
The 1875 Kaiser Max class consisted of three new casemate ironclads built under a program officially presented as reconstruction of older ships.
Developed for Austro-Hungarian Navy, Kaiser Max class (1875) belongs to the Battleships and capital ships family and is associated with Late 19th century. Its documented designations include Casemate ironclad, while its intended roles include Fleet combatant.
Development and construction
The new hulls mounted eight 21 cm Krupp guns and retained the ram-and-casemate logic of the post-Lissa Austrian school while using more modern machinery and hull construction.
The documented program for Kaiser Max class (1875) lists 3 planned, 3 ordered, 3 laid down, 3 completed, and 0 cancelled, with design work beginning in 1873, construction beginning in 1874, and construction ending in 1878. These figures define the scale and chronology currently supported by the class sources.
Design characteristics and intended role
The surviving classification data associates Kaiser Max class (1875) with Iron hull, Central casemate, Steam, Sail assist, and Ram. Read together with the recorded roles of Fleet combatant, these attributes show the operational problem the design was intended to address without implying specifications that the sources do not establish.
The class record identifies Austro-Hungarian Navy as the principal design or service authority. Where individual ships changed navy, name, or pennant, those later identities are retained on the ship pages rather than treated as separate vessels.
Service history and class roster
Limited budgets kept the ships inactive for long periods; they later served in secondary and accommodation roles after becoming obsolete.
The class roster currently links 3 ships. Named members include SMS Don Juan d'Austria, SMS Kaiser Max, and SMS Prinz Eugen. The linked ships are associated with Austro-Hungarian Navy.
Historical significance
The class captures both the technical continuity and financial constraints of Austro-Hungarian naval policy in the 1870s.
Kaiser Max class (1875) is most useful when read as both a design and a group of individual careers. The class page establishes the shared technical and operational context; the linked ship pages preserve differences in construction, service identity, deployment, transfer, preservation, and fate where those details are documented.
